Kharlie had a slow start in 2023, after years of injuries and other problems. His go-to workout scheme consisted of a walk (0.47 mile or more) followed by a run and then another walk to finish. Most runs included walk breaks, usually 30 seconds a few times each mile. Slow and steady wins the race.
After getting safely through three years of a pandemic, Kharlie and his wife, Wendi, both got sick with COVID-19 in November; this put a stop to Kharlie’s running for a while as he regained his strength, and then it was very slow going once he resumed running.
The weather was beautiful, but the race was tough for me. The first mile was a gentle upward incline that slowed me down, and this set a slow pace for the whole run, though I picked up a bit in the last mile (it was an out-and-back course). I took three 30-second walk breaks: two in the first mile and once on a steeper hill, just after the turnaround point. ~ Despite my slow time (10 seconds slower than last year), I won a third place medal for my age group.
