As 2022 began, Kharlie was still recovering from a hip impingement. Strength training, stretching, and walking were his go-to workouts.
On March 20, he began doing very short run segments along with the walking. By April 10, he was doing run/walk intervals. As of June 30, he was running longer intervals and a bit faster, as well as riding bicycle. By late September, it was possible to run without stopping, but the pace was still quite slow; by now, the hip was almost back to normal, but stamina was improving very slowly.
By year’s end, the hip and knee were nearly 100% back to normal; however, Kharlie’s running pace was still slow, over 11 minutes per mile. Kharlie continued to incorporate lifting into his workouts.
Started with intervals, walking 45 sec at the end of every 3 mins. After the first mile (12 min), I ran straight through except for one 45-sec walk interval on a hill. Though this was my slowest 5K road race ever (by over 5 minutes!), it still went off well.
Oddly, my age group (male, 60–69) had more runners in it than any other male age group (women, 30–39 outnumbered us). The first two male finishers in the 5K were both over 60! I finished fifth of six, so I didn’t win a medal, but I didn’t really expect to. I ran just to do it again, and to support the cause.
