Noxious Fumes

Track #9 of Umm…

It seems that just about everyone has either written or sung a song about a breakup, but guess what? I’ve never experienced one myself! I’m certainly not complaining; Wendi and I have been married for 25 years and are still happy together, so I consider myself richly blessed.

One day I decided to write a breakup song, just to see if I could make it sound convincing. I let a friend listen to it — he had gone through a bitter divorce several years back. He sent me this reply: “I am telling you, Lyrics, Music, Message. You’re hitting on all 8 cylinders, my friend. It is so very good.” Did I do it? You be the judge.

When we were together,
I gave my love to you.
We pledged our souls ’til we return to dust;
But when you left for him,
you made it clear you were untrue,
’Cause on that day, you betrayed my trust.

These noxious fumes
emanating from the ruins of our love
are smothering me
by choking the air right out of ev’ry breath I take.
These noxious fumes
penetrating deep within my broken heart
are killing me
by sucking the emotional life-blood from my veins,

’cause I made a big mistake
in loving you.
I should have known that by this time in life,
we would be through.
It didn’t take a rocket scientist
to figure out that our love was failing,
But you left me in such pain
that all I can do is sit here weeping and wailing.

I may love another
when I get over you,
If the loss of you I can endure;
But never will I marry,
’cause there’s no guarantee;
I won’t risk this pain again, and that’s for sure.

These noxious fumes
emanating from the ruins of our love
are smothering me
by choking the air right out of ev’ry breath I take.
These noxious fumes
penetrating deep within my broken heart
are killing me
by sucking the emotional life-blood from my veins,

’cause I made a big mistake.
I made a big mistake.

These noxious fumes
are smothering me.
These noxious fumes
are killing me.
These noxious fumes,
These noxious fumes.
