He’s Not Here

Track #5 of Umm…

In 2005 our church held an Easter Celebration service on Easter Sunday in a local high school auditorium. I had not sung publicly in years, but for some reason I felt moved to ask (two weeks before the service) if there was any special music planned for the service. “No,” came the reply, “but we’d love it if you sang something.” I agreed, intending to hit the local Christian bookstore in search of an appropriate soundtrack.

That never happened. Later that day, as I was working at the grocery store, this song began to come to me. I had it finished within a week, and by Good Friday I had a soundtrack completed on the computer. On Sunday morning, I sang it in front of 532 people, and I was very blessed that it went off splendidly!

The original accompaniment consisted of a virtual piano, electric bass, drums and a brass section; for this album I swapped the piano and electric bass for a vibraphone and acoustic bass for a more jazzlike sound, which seems to accent the celebratory quality of the song.

Early in the morning they came with the spices
to anoint the body of Jesus
He was crucified and they laid Him inside
a borrowed tomb
He died for the sins of all mankind
to redeem the souls of those born blind
And His body was nowhere to be found

For sometime in the night
the angel of the Lord came down
and rolled the stone away
from the door of the tomb
And this is what the angel said:

He’s not here
He is risen from the dead
Resurrected from the grave
Just as He said
He is gone
See where they laid His head
The Lord Jesus Christ is risen from the dead

Christ is risen from the dead
And He’s alive forevermore

Many in this world worship somebody
who never died and rose again
But with no resurrection there is no hope
of eternal life
If in this life only we have hope in Christ
then we are of all men most miserable
Our faith is all in vain
and we’re still lost in our sins

But now let it be known
that Christ is risen from the dead
and become the firstfruits
of those who have fallen asleep
Hallelujah

He’s not here
He is risen from the dead
Resurrected from the grave
Just as He said
He is gone
See where they laid His head
The Lord Jesus Christ is risen from the dead

He’s not here
He is risen from the dead
Resurrected from the grave
Just as He said
He is gone
Have you not the Scriptures read?
The Lord Jesus Christ is risen…

He’s not here
He is risen from the dead
Resurrected from the grave
Just as He said
He is gone
Have you not the Scriptures read?
The Lord Jesus Christ is risen from the dead
He is risen from the dead
The Lord Jesus Christ is risen from the dead
