Hopefully, you will find this newsletter to be a gem, and one you won’t want to be without. It seems to be coming at just the right time, as there is a lot going on currently in the local music scene! I’ll begin with my own musical progress:
Digital audio: My four latest remixes can be heard on my SoundCloud page. Two of the songs on that page, “Wedding Day” and “Birthday Song,” are from February 29, so the audio quality is different; these will eventually be remixed as well. None of the new remixes will be released on Bandcamp until complete albums are ready.
My April/May 2016 Sampler was given to 48 different people. It consisted of eight or nine tracks (May included “Born Too Early”). It was intended as an interim free sampler, until I have a regular album ready.
My official website is being redesigned, and new material will be added. Some, but not all, of the new material will be music-related. More news will follow as the work progresses.

Mystery Mirrors (one-man band of Jesse Ramirez) released a 10-track self-titled debut album on August 20, 2016. The album description is fun to read and pretty well sums it up:
Nostalgia fueled guitars ring through a steady pulse of electronic beats riding on a bed of furry synthesizers.
Honest lyrics with a sometimes strained delivery round out the album as a Midwestern Bedroom Pop classic.
An album that blends folk style songwriting with lo-fi beats and analog synth lines. Obsolete and Cutting edge at the same time in different ways.
This album grabbed my attention from the very first track. There is a warm, lively vibe; I found the blend of old and new styles and technology quite satisfying, and the lyrics are well-written and intriguing.
You can listen and even purchase the digital album at the official Bandcamp page. Physical copies of the album on CD will be available this fall. You can also follow Mystery Mirrors on Facebook.
Jennifer Ruse, a local singer-songwriter, is now recording under the name Ruse. She recently finished a six-track album entitled Just a Ruse which was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Danial Monson-Bergum (aka The Fur Trade) at The Outpost. We watched the album unfold between April 28 and August 6. Some of the songs have been played on Janesville Community Radio.
Ruse features a solid contralto voice, an edgy but smooth vocal style, and conversational lyrics which tie it all together. Her guitar and some additional instruments by The Fur Trade round out the recordings for a great listening experience.
Victoria Pearl (Vicky Kolego) and Mackenzie Benish are currently collaborating as Prone to Sorrow. They did three gigs in July 2016 and have another scheduled for 6 pm on Friday, September 9 at Back to the Bean in Stoughton, WI, where they will open for the band Preacher’s Daughter.
