Charlie with Pancake Riot

Before it was officially a band

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Open Mic at Mocha Moment, 6:30–8:30 p.m. ~ I (Charlie Petitt) opened with a few songs on the ukulele (including “Wendi,” never done with a live instrument before, and a brand new song, “Until That Day Comes”). ~ Next came Woody and Ann (mandolin/fiddle) who, joined on guitar by Ken Wagman, played several folk tunes including “Ashokan Farewell.” ~ Robert d’Entremont played a couple of classical guitar tunes. ~ Jeff Robichaud’s ukulele set included Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and “Such Great Heights.” ~ Kat Farnsworth did a great rendition of the Beatles’ “All My Loving” in her set. She also teamed with Candace Griffin for “2,100 Miles.” ~ Danial Monson-Bergum wowed us with his original “Hunger Moon.” ~ At the end, our Song Sharing group played the new song they wrote last night (I was up there with just a shaker). Included were Mackenzie Benish, Kat Farnsworth (on guitar), Danial Monson-Bergum, Candace Griffin, myself, and Jeff Robichaud.

That last song was “Coffee Shop,” which later appeared on the album Yours, Mine & Ours by Pancake Riot.

There was a recording session on November 12 at Dan’s house, to get a “big choir” sound on the last chorus of a song called “City Tonight.” ~ On the next day, November 13, the new band chose the name, Members of the Pancake Riot (this was later changed to simply, Pancake Riot). First time as a band, at Mocha Moment

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

8:15 - Members of the Pancake Riot - our mixed ensemble played for the first time as an actual band. Robbie and Dan played guitars; Kat played bass for two songs and guitar on a third; Jeff played his new cajón; I (Charlie) played my ukulele. Set included Robbie’s “Drive Away,” Kat’s “2,100 Miles,” and my own “Minnesota Highway.” We had planned to do Jeff’s “Stoplights” but ran out of time; Jeff was okay with this and seemed almost relieved.

First time elsewhere

Saturday, December 7, 2013

See the Riot act: Come to Dunkin Donuts (Milton Ave. location) at 7pm tonight for coffee, donuts, and live music by Members of the Pancake Riot!
(Posted at 2:46 p.m. from mobile)

Members of the Pancake Riot played their (our) first show at Dunkin Donuts tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. Only four people stayed for the whole show. I (Charlie) joined them about 20 minutes into the show, coming right from work; I played my ukulele, but since it isn’t electric, it could only be heard during softer passages. Songs by six of the seven band members were played (mine were excluded because I had to miss several recent practices, so I couldn’t practice my songs with them). Candace sang Jeff’s song “Stoplights” (Jeff was not there). It was a good time.

Charlie and Wendi Do a Christmas Show

Monday, December 9, 2013

Wendi and I did our first-ever music show together: it was Christmas music, with the keyboard, at St. Elizabeth Home. Char McIntosh works there and had asked us about three weeks ago to do this. The show went well; it lasted from about 3:05 to 3:50. The residents loved it. “Christmas Comes Anew,” a seldom-heard traditional French carol, went over very well. Our set is listed below; the numbers are from the Riverside Ramblers songbook; the last four are from our own Christmas collection.

  1. Blue Christmas (#26)
  2. O Little Town of Bethlehem (#30) vs. 1-3
  3. It Came Upon the Midnight Clear (#31) vs. 1-2
  4. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (#18) Wendi solo
  5. Deck the Halls (#16) vs. 1-2
  6. O Come, All Ye Faithful (#22) vs. 1-3
  7. Joy to the World (#23) vs. 1,2,4
  8. Home for the Holidays (#21) Charlie solo
  9. Go Tell it on the Mountain (#20)
  10. Star Child (#32) all verses (solo: W 2,4; C 3)
  11. Frosty the Snowman (#1)
  12. White Christmas (#3)
  13. Christmas Comes Anew (all verses)
  14. Hark! the Herald Angels Sing (vs. 1-2)
  15. God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen (vs. 1,3,8)
  16. We Wish You a Merry Christmas
