See what’s different in this album since its release as Umm… in 2007.

The original Umm… album had quite a history. You can read about it here. When you reach the bottom of that page, you will find an album cover that looks very familiar!

Liner Notes

Read an alternate write-up here

This album is a remix and remaster of Umm… by Charlie Petitt, which was released in June 2007. The original vocal tracks and instrument files were used for this edition. A few arrangements have been subtly changed, and all audio has been updated with newer processing.

The songs on this album are about life, love, Jesus… there’s one song about a breakup… and one song is about the Ummamum (say UMM-a-mum), whom you see pictured here. Often called simply “the Umm,” he is our ambassador of goodwill, the goofy guy that tries to cheer you up when bad times get you down.

Musical styles include Gospel jazz, rock jams, some slow love ballads, and folk-classical fusion. That’s why I chose Umm… as the original title of this album. Now I use the stage name Kharlie M, but I’m still the same guy, so for this edition, I went with Umm… It’s Me.

Everything about this album—music and lyrics, composing and arranging, MIDI sequencing, all vocals, recording, editing, mixing, mastering—I have done myself. The cover photo was taken in our back yard by Wendi Petitt in 2007.

I dedicate this album to my dear wife, Wendi, who has wholeheartedly supported me in my music, even offering helpful suggestions and encouraging me to keep going and not quit. We’ve been married 43+ years, through good times and bad. I Love You, and Thank You from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks also to everyone else who has given me encouragement, even if not mentioned here by name. These recordings would not have been possible without the encouragement and support of family, friends, and most of all, God in Heaven.

I thank God for life, health and strength, the skills and tools, and the opportunity to do this. My prayer is that this music will be enjoyed and treasured by people everywhere, and that it may provide warmth and encouragement in the midst of today’s exceedingly complicated world.

By the way, in the song “I’m the Umm,” the phrase “Umm the Mmm” simply means that the Umm is good (mmm like delicious, get it?). With that toothy grin, he usually manages to bring a smile to anyone who needs it—and most of us could use a few more smiles each day!
