Last Show with Pancake Riot

Friday, January 17, 2014

Members of the Pancake Riot played from 7 to 9 p.m. at Dunkin Donuts on Milton Avenue. I used Jeff’s acoustic-electric ukulele, but I had some problems: the electric cord made the body of the uke heavy enough to try to slide out of my grip (it has no strap); also, Dan had the volume set too low on the sound system, so it was hard to hear me well, even though I was plugged in.

Present were Danial, Jeff, Kat, Candace, Isaac and myself. We did my song “All Over” but only with the uke, since the guitarists had trouble playing by B-flat chord. Jeff accompanied on the cajón; Dan sang along with me, and Kat and Candace harmonized. It was quite fun.

The band is getting more refined: vocals are mainly sung by Dan, Kat and Candace. Kat wrote quite a few of the songs in tonight’s set (one, “Homecoming,” was co-written by Candace). Jeff didn’t sing “Stoplights” but played the cajón instead (he played it for the whole show). The sound was off: the guitars and bass were loud, and the vocals couldn’t be heard clearly. ~ Isaac played his “Slide Song” during a mid-show “intermission.” ~ Candace’s song, “Enjoy the Ride,” was clearly country, along the lines of Carrie Underwood or Miranda Lambert. ~ The show was quite fun; everyone said the band played well, and that I played well. Still, this was to be my last show with this band. Some band members, especially Kat, seemed a bit sad to see me leave; Kat asked if I would be at song share next Wednesday (I am not sure yet).

Already Using the New Name

Kharlie M Returns: Ran 3.57 miles in 29:38 (8:18/mile), 3:53 p.m.
“Come on, Kharlie M; you can do this,” I often tell myself during a run. I say it with a hard “k” sound. It’s just a pet name (my middle initial isn’t M). Still bouncing back from sickness but already running strong. Kharlie M is back!

Playing and Singing on a Podcast

Wednesday, April 23, 2014

I’m going to be on the radio… Discover Janesville on Janesville Community Radio with Yuri Rashkin. Look it up online; it airs from 10:30 to noon today!

In the basement with Yuri for Discover Janesville. Will play a few songs on the ukulele.
(Tweeted at 10:27 a.m.)

This was a podcast of Janesville Community Radio before they got their broadcast license; they are now WADR, 103.5 FM. My set, played on a concert ukulele (normal tuning), included “Until That Day Comes,” a love song I wrote for Wendi.

The radio show went well. I did three songs: “Minnesota Highway,” “Until That Day Comes,” and “Coffee.” Yuri took video of the second song; I’ll share the link when it becomes available. On the broadcast, the Janesville city manager was there, also three people representing Friends of Noah and the health department, then a local doctor and author. It was all very interesting!

Playing Impromptu at the Farmers Market

Saturday, May 31, 2014

Just returned from the Janesville Farmers Market. Yuri Rashkin was running an open mic… I ended up playing eight original songs! It was a great time. A friend of mine from work got to hear me play for the first time.
(Posted to Charlie Petitt Music at 12:57 p.m. Songs are listed below, in no particular order. The “friend” referred to was Paula Feeney, who works with me at Woodman’s.)
